A Pacific Raceways Weekend – April 18-21st, 2013

Honda Tech Meet 4-21-2013 111To most people the weekend is a couple days long. In Pacific’s case that can add a few day’s to the “weekend”. April 18 through April 21 at the “Spring Fair” at the Puyallup Fairgrounds started the weekend off. Entering into the Auto Alley Expo Hall the first display you see is the “Pink’s” winner Dave Wakefield’s blue Chevelle. Walking clockwise around the hall display’s by ProFormance Racing School, a trio of Jr. Dragsters, the pair of championship winning bike’s of  Joe Lind.

In the same display area a father/son team of Funderburg Racing. MX race bike’s including a new YZ450 on display by Lance Smail, Pacific’s MX manager gives you an idea of just a brief look at some of the class bikes that navigate the track. The display by PGP Motorsports Park took you to the Pacific Raceways table full of info and answers.

Office personal Taffi and Malissa had it covered this day. Bracketstars fine showing rounded out just the outside of the “Alley”. The center area had a steller mix of NHRA runners, a Nostalgia player and ET series racer’s. Add in a NASCAR simulator and a few original Pace Cars from the LeMay collection, a diverse picture shows itself of what the raceway provides. That was Thursday.

Back at the track Friday brought in club roadcourse action for BMW. Many of the local car clubs can be found using the track through out the week. Lost Mines Safety Team covering the turn station’s and Race Rescue on hand just in case take care of “safety” on track.

High Performance Sport Driving Day has Saturday covered. With the affore mentioned track safety in place and “school” and oversite by ProFormance Racing School, it is a 9 to 5 lap after lap of  teaching and learning.

With SpeedFactory presenting the Honda Tech Meet more than 1500 cars from all over the Northwest filled the upper and lower paddock’s on Sunday. This “annual” event brings the Honda dragracer’s to the well prepped dragstrip.

SpeedFactory’s world-record holding team laid down a respectful 8.36sec. at 184.55mph. These mistro’s of everything fast on a Honda can be found at their University Place Shop. More info at www.speedfactoryracing.net. In the mix of Honda racers, Mitch Chamberlin’s “Rodfather” a ‘AA’ Supercharged 51 Chevy made “shakedown” passes. Mother nature ended the dragracing with a downpour that scattered racers and spectators running for cover.

Not worried about a “dry” surface to run on the MX track also held practice on this Sunday. 9 to 5 practice gave the riders a good varity of surface conditions. MX racers in the Northwest do race in all weather conditions. Rain or shine they do fly.

The offsite event at the fair withstanding a ‘normal’ weekend like this takes place on the property most all weekends.

Swift Tool ET Drag Racing Series At Pacific Raceways

Swift Tool ET Race #3 4-14-2013 157

The first two races of the Swift Tool sponsored Et series were washed out by more then enough rain, but it was not because they say “it always rains in Seattle”. It is because it decided to rain on those days. With that fact to contend with the drag strip crew will stop at nothing short of another downpour once they start drying the track.

That effort noted by a number of racers the day before bought praise and three boxes of doughnuts for the crew. It’s the little things like those efforts that the racers appreciate. Giving back a little of that appreciation the racer’s and crew with “street” tires drove a up and down on the shut down area of the track to help get the water up and dry the track.

With the sun shining a bit more from the breakup of the clouds the relentless assult on the track surface got the 2013 racing season underway. Going thru time trials, racers getting a fix on their performance in the new season, the mood grew bright as the spring sky was shining.

With 90 entries to start the season and enough time to run the race before curfew (5:00pm). Almost thru the first round of Sportsman class mother nature stopped the racing cold. The rain was coming down quite heavy with hail bits in the mix, it was all over almost before it got started. Such is drag racing in the springtime in the great “Northwet”.

Pacific Raceways Moto-X Gold Star Series

Gold Star Series 4-7-2013 600With the opening weekend for both the moto-x and dragstrip happening on the same day, the season got underway in a big way. Sadly, mother nature had another idea.

Anyone try to drag race in the rain?  The rain turned the moto-x track into a bit of a sloppy mess. Although the track was drained for the most part by Lance Smail and his crew, the relentless rain “puddled” on the surface. I have to believe that the rider’s were both getting a lot of experience along with having quite a bit of fun playing in the “MUD”.

Get the “holeshot” start and you stayed pretty much free of mud, those coming from behind were coated so much it was hard to tell who they were. A pressure washer was pretty much the “it” machine for the weekend.

With the April showers bringing May’s color to the area, all that water will go to good use and the drier track will bring the track to a more race able condition. Any discomfort felt by the racers will be long forgotten towards the end of the season when the “points” they earned at this event comes into play.

On hand providing “hot drinks, burgers and dogs”, was “Big Food”, Pacific Raceways Concessionaire along with John Madden and his “Race Rescue” track safety team provided any aid that arose.

Over 1,200 images of all the fun in the mud are now available in the gallery – click here to go there.

A Triad Of Dad’s & Daughters

Lucas Oil Division Six 8-18-2012 110Lucas Oil Division Six 8-18-2012 124Auto Max USA #11 7-28-2012 196
This trio of father’s and their talented daughter’s competing in NHRA’s Super Comp class are as different as the car’s they drive.

Beginning with the Larson’s (Mark&Sherri) and their youngest daughter Amanda the path to her seat in the Super Comp as a competitor took the longest path. Mark’s path to the drag strip took him to the water at Green Lake in Seattle in a “Cracker box boat” his father and he put together. Realizing early on the wetness and at speed the water is real hard if you go in it out of the boat. Shifting to the pavement briefly in a 67 Camaro Mark crossed paths with a chance to get a front motor dragster. With numerous changes over the years to pretty much what the car is today Mark campaigned (at times quite successful) through the 80′ and into the 90’s, with wife Sherri and oldest daughter Nikki in tow. Amanda came along in 87′ putting a bit more emphasis on his right foot to be the best he could be. The racing winnings helped allot with two girls to bring up.

With Amanda turning 8 during the Winternationals, and Dad calling her from said “races” to wish her ‘Happy Birthday” all she wanted to know is if he went to the NHRA trailer to turn in her paperwork for her license. Jumping into a car owned by Dad’s friend Jim Ronan, Amanda began her Jr. Dragster days. Learning to build motor’s for the Jr. Amanda got a taste of what her hard work could do. Getting their own car in 1997 and running their built motor’s it did not take long for her talent to shine. Winning two championships in 2001(one for the track and one for the NWJDRA) Amanda was really hooked then. Building her own motor’s Amanda was at first a little leery about letting people know what she was doing until she seen how well it ran. The combination she put together took her to the age out in the Jr’s. Having now outgrown the Jr. it was sold to the Div.7 Director who has put his three daughters’ into, see a pattern here?

The jump into the Super Comp dragster was not an automatic. With many hours in the garage sitting in the car, going through the procedures of what it takes just to get to the pre-staged point. Then add the what if’s Mark thru at her to think about. Muscle memory plays a big part in racing and wanting Amanda to understand the workings of the car with the involvement in tearing it down and putting it back together helped prepare her for what the car is telling her on a run. With only limited seat time the first couple of years all the learning in the garage took time to transition.

With all the seat time now the “learning” in the garage is beginning to show as it has caught the attention of her competitor’s. Some honestly saying “she is a force to be reckoned with”.

Taking a similar but quite different path to Super Comp Jamie Drzayich’s start came in Jr Dragster classes. With her father Nick guiding, drawing on his own racing experience that began in 1961 with a Corvair of the same year in Ohio to the silver Cadillac here in Seattle he knew the feeling his children were having. Being 20yrs. removed from racing, the “Cad” brought the pure fun and family feeling to the outings at the track. A number of improvements to the 4000 plus pound Cadillac made racing it “pure fun”. Progressing thru a number of cars and even a “Pro Stocker” the “Cad” became the learning car for the kid’s. Mike and Adam taking the “cad” to Canada and returning with hardware while still in high school showed Nick what his car and the talent his kid’s had.

Lucas Oil Division Six 8-18-2012 124
When her older brother’s were in the Jr. ranks Jamie was everywhere soaking up everything she seen and heard gaining the nickname “dirt magnet”. See she knew soon enough it would be her turn.

LBRS024Older brother Adam had his own Jr. and Jamie and sister Amy shared one when it came their turn. Adam had the alcohol powered and the sister’s the slower. Soon becoming “if he can do it so can I” felt Jamie of her older brother’s. Seeing her brother’s go through the Cadillac’ 16 could not come fast enough. Now having a driver’s license she wanted her turn in the “Cad”. Knowing the power of the car Nick said “not so fast”. Let’s start out on one of the Wednesday night street drags and see how you do. Good thing! See the inside of the car is pretty much like it came out of the factory, and that includes a telescoping steering wheel that because of her firm grip and the hard launch it popped the lock and it expanded toward her. Not expecting that to happen but recovering quickly by half track dad had to tell her to lift to not exceed the ET limits of having a passenger in the car and no helmets. Dad knew after that she could handle it.

Division 6 Olymoics 8-19-2011 063With older brother’s Mike and Adam getting the first “big dragsters” in the family the influence on Jamie became a lot stronger. Aging that “if they can do it, so can I” comes into play.

Dad now is driving a dragster having fun again after his time out of the seat of a race car. Now Jamie’s eye’s turned to the big seat. Watching everything her father was doing soaking it up as her turn was coming. With only a seat pad addition to the car, Jamie fit right in the car as this is the only change between her and her dad driving it besides the competition number.

With brother Adam letting her first drive his car for the first time, he snared his dad’s radios to talk her through the procedures knowing already from his time in the car what it would do. Soon these talks on the radio ended as she said “let my do this on my own”. It then became apparent of her talent behind the wheel.

Her seat time being limited due to her work and getting a new house, the time at the track is really 100% fun family time. No sense in going if you are not having fun say’s Jamie.

That brings us to the last of this trio, the Lea’s, Tory and Megan. Tory got his entrust in racing while still in high school. Racing everything his parent’s had until he got his Camaro he was hooked. A by chance dent in his door of the car brought him mind you while still in high school to Frank Nelson Sr. That’s right the father of our now Div.6 director. Frank took him under his wing as he did with another friend letting him work on the car and teaching him along the way. Spending so much time over there Tory’s mother would call making sure he was not becoming a bother. Said Frank “don’t worry we fed him and he will be home by 10 o’clock”. Frank became a very good teacher and kept me out of trouble say’s Tory. Building that bushes find car and racing under Frank’s guidance turned into a 13 second car he raced until the dragster came along. Buying a new Neal Parks car that he raced for 17 yrs. brought much fun and success. While at a race in Woodburn with daughter Carina the chance to get a new car came around. Having already spoke to another racer about his car this brought a dilemma. After gracefully backing out of that deal and looking at the car his friend was talking about on Sat. Sunday night it was his. Not following her sister Carina thru the Jr. Dragster program Megan had school on her mind first. With Bachelors in Communications and Advertising in hand looking for employment Megan had more opportunity’s to get seat time though not a lot it was still seat time.

Auto Max USA #11 7-28-2012 196

In 38 yrs. of racing 2012 say’s Tory was his best ever. Megan learned to drive and the girls were quite involved in the racing. Listening to his girls on what they were saying plus changing his driving style a touch paid off quite successfully by winning the Pacific Northwest Super Comp Association’s season’s championship. Celebrating with daughter Carina, Megan had the dilemma. Remember WSU, the school sticker proudly rides on the front of the dragster; huge fans of that collage are both Tory and Megan. That dedication to the school took Megan to a game in Seattle and Carina with dad.

Lucas Oil Division Six 8-18-2012 154

Having neck surgery this off season for Tory will give Megan most of the seat time in the car as no changes to the car are needed. Carina on the other hand will require some. Still in her infancy as far as seat time Megan has shown her father that she has the raw talent to handle the car though standing behind watching her Tory still tries to drive the car with body English. Seems to work as Megan makes pass after pass.

NW Summer Bracket Nationals 8-27-2011 562

Good luck to all in the upcoming season to all and to their competitors “LOOKOUT” they are coming and hungry to “WIN”.

Chassis Certification & Test & Tune At Pacific Raceways

Chassis Cert. and Test and Tune 3-23-2013 328Pacific Raceways kicked off the 2013 season with a combined test and tune and chassis certification for new and rebuilt race cars constructed during the off season.

High thin clouds and crisp cool temps greeted those early arrivers wanting to get a jump on the later arrivers. The weather conditions did not impead the inspection process but did slow down the test and tune porttion as the track tempatures needed to be at least 55 degrees.

The high clouds parted, and the sun shined on the track surface increasing track temps enough to allow the track workers to finish the prep process and get cars running down the strip to start the new season. With an impressive number of racers lined up for tech inspection to start the season off Pacific’s tech inspectors were busy making sure everyone was safe to run the strip.

Meanwhile the NHRA Northwest Division 6 inspectors checked out a number of chassis so the builder’s could continue and finish their race cars for the upcoming season. The NHRA Division Director was on hand to answer any issues should they arise or clarify the rules to those who asked.

As the racers made passes down the track it became apparent the track prep was at good and sticky as numerous cars and bikes hiked up the front tires off the ground. By the time curfew came most all got quite a few laps down the strip and everyone is chomping at the bit to stomp the gas peddle down agin at the next opportunity.

High Performance Sport Driving Day At Pacific Raceways

High Performance Sport Driving Day 3-178-2013 628Kent, WA – For St. Patrick’s Day, Rainbows, Pot “O” Gold, little green men were nowhere to be seen but a shamrock was spotted for today’s HPSPD at Pacific Raceways.

Quite a number of cars showed up for a holiday romp around the track. The weather played it’s part and put a “GOLD” shine on the surface from time to time and put a big grin on the driver’s faces. With no moisture on the track surface until the last half hour of the day’s session, lap after lap went on with no issues for the safety teams. Luck of the Irish? Good driving? Either way it”s the best way to finish a driving day. Images from all the action are now available – click here to go there.

16 Hour Roll-X At Pacific Raceways

16hr. Roll-X 3-10-2013 617The two days that comprise the 16hr Roll-X could not have been more different. The first day started out with cool temps with bright sunshine. The second day was damp, overcast and featured light rain.  With team names like “The Flying Lumberjacks”, “Gange Green” and “FahrFrumWinnin” and cars to match, this event brings out inventive minds and ingenuity.

Saturday began with the sunglasses or tinted visors as the sun glared down on these stripped down to the bare essentials cars as they made their way around Pacific’s 2.25mi. roadcourse. As the sun got higher in the sky the glare eased off the driver’s forward line of sight and the lap times increased, with most lapping at about 1:45min. per circuit. All four of the required driver’s per team got their 2hr. shift behind the wheel.

By the end of the first 8hrs. of the race the leader had amassed a very impressive 229 laps or 515.25miles and held a 3 lap lead on the second place team.

Sunday greeted all with the need for cool and wet conditions. Some pretty heavy jackets were common. The drizzle let up for a while at the start of the last 8hrs, but the driver’s now had a slippery track to navigate, unlike the conditions yesterday. As the lapping went on the teams tires stripped away a layer of moisture in the groove and lap times increased to a little lass then the day before. Not bad for such a change in traction.

The teams went through their driver changes, each got driver their shot at the track. With rain covering the course some lost their line and put the safety workers to work, something they did not have to do the day before. The safety workers had to sweep off some gravel, and mop up some fluids, then the racing continued.

When the checkered flag waved the leader had gained a 9 lap lead over the second place team. With a total of 417 laps or 938.25 miles the team of number 112 “Team Beagle” claimed the prize.

High Performance Sport Driving Day

High Performance Sport Driving Day 3-2-2013 650With the weather overcast and no rain this weekend, the Sport Driving day featured a multitude of instructions, teachings, and focus on the finer points of the craft. The Proformance Driving School along with Gymkhana Drift and Lost Mines Safety Team all put their skills to work for those who came to learn.

Showing the correct line around the road course, how to follow the coned course and learn the safety rules involved in overseeing a road course event were all going on at the same time.

A nice surprise was testing by an open wheel car recently rebuilt. Needless to say those who came to watch were seen moving from observation point to observation point to catch what was happening on the track.

With drag racing and moto-cross still to come the activities at Pacific Raceways are fast building to a strong 2013 season. Check out their website for upcoming events  at www.pacificraceways.com

Instruction – Learn – Experience

High Performance Sport Driving Day 2-16-2013 529Driving on a road course is not the beginning; you have to back up a few steps. Starting with classroom sessions on rules and proper lines around the track, how to get into and out of the turns. Pick your points for your own cars ability, not the one in front of you. Beginning with your cars breaking actions (ABS/Non-ABS). The instructors run you a number of times through the breaking zone, passing on what they are seeing. One at the start and one at the end watching what the cars do and explaining what they see to the drivers. Once comfortable with this step you proceed to a lap around the course at about 50mph learning the line and noting the turn numbers around the track.

The corner worker stations pretty much follow the turn numbers so it quickly helps with learning the turn numbers, which the instructors can then ask them in the after run classroom de-briefing/schooling, “How did it feel in through turn 4”?

With the instructors driving the students car they get a firsthand look on how to navigate the track following the proper line around. The quickest way around the course is not neccessrly the fastest car but the one that follows the line without mistakes. With that imaginary string from the break to the steering wheel in the drivers mind you learn that you can only do one action to your car at a time, multitasking the action of your car is not a good thing and most time it won’t end well doing so.

After a lunch break the students do a “Lead/Follow” around the course, again at about 50mph they get to feel the right line to take as the car in front of you is the instructor. Put to use the “controlled breaking” and “threshold breaking” first hand, be comfortable in your mind to better do what you are attempting.

Following with another classroom session the students are cut loose on their own to go at their own discretion on the course. Lap after lap you see the confidence building as repetition at anything will get you better. In this case it’s called seat time and there is no simulator that can match it.

With a visit of the second place finisher in their class at the 24hr race in Daytona, Bullitt Racing put some laps on their Porsche and drawing a crowd to the stands. In this type of racing they are like royalty and will draw a crowd.

Now the people at ProFormance Racing Schools people starting with owner Don Kitch Jr. and instructors Michael Lord and Brent Jordan follow the radio conversations of the turn workers and if need be they are “Black Flagged”  and brought in to be “schooled” on their mistakes. Back out they go knowing all involved are in it for their best interest.

If interested in trying this contact don@proformanceracingschool.com or call 253-630-5130 and he will get you started.

GroundHog Day In Seattle – High Performance Sport Driving At Pacific Raceways

High Performance Sport Driving Day 2-2-2013 810Groundhog Day in Seattle fell in step with the predictions from the east – NO SHADOW. I believe the rodent was under cloudy weather, not the FOG that hovered around the track for the High Performance Sport Driving Day at Pacific Raceways. Not that it would have changed his call, but driving in the fog is a bit more challenging then under cloudy conditions.

With instructors from Proformance Racing School located on the grounds, instruction turned to stopping under control. With the fog adding moisture to the track surface the entries gained some real world experience under these conditions. Each student got one on one with the teachers before each attempt at stopping safely between the marked cones.

Meanwhile the fog persisted to hang around giving just enough visibility to safely run the course. Turn workers have to be able to see from station to station to insure the safety on the track.

There were a wide range of cars running the course all day long.  The tracks surface moisture evaporated enough to foster increased lap times and speeds for all of those involved. There are quite a number of Driving Days ahead, those who can take advantage of more seat time will gain a leg up come racing season.

The weather in the Northwest this time of the year always the un-known, so each practice day can be quite different. Getting in all the laps that you can will only help in the long run.
